flannel, interlining, and thread.
Portugal’s textile industry. Her mother, who began sewing in her grandmother’s
factory as a child, became known for stitching in her sleep—a symbol of exhaustion, discipline, and quiet
resilience.
A hand-stitched fabric shifts colour, evoking the trance of repetitive labour, with sharp red lines
marking moments of violent awakening. A speaker plays the rhythmic hum of a sewing
machine, broken by silence and a voice recounting the hidden toll.
Garcia weaves personal memory with collective experience, honouring generations of unspoken
sacrifice.
